International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD)
Aug 25 - Aug 31, 2021 |
This August 31 marks the 20th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). This global health observance has provided a marked occasion to raise awareness and remember those lost to overdose and aims to reduce the stigma of a drug-related death.
This year, CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control is marking IOAD with the release of two new articles in the Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report (MMWR) that highlight trends in prescription and illicit benzodiazepine-involved nonfatal and fatal overdoses and their effects on public health. Additionally, a CDC feature on overdoses involving benzodiazepines will be released August 31 to help educate consumers about these drugs and what can be done about the growing threat of benzodiazepine overdose.
Across the US, we've seen an alarming rise in drug overdose deaths. @CDCgov's #RxAwareness campaign aims to lower prescription opioid misuse by sharing real stories of people whose lives have been impacted by the opioid crisis. Learn more: https://go.usa.gov/xFEQk
