Radon and Indoor Air Quality

Florida Department of Health in Nassau County Environmental Health

Radon

  • Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
  • 1 in 5 homes in Florida has an elevated radon level.
  • Test your home free of charge by filling out this form.

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, colorless, tasteless, and radioactive gas produced from the decay of radium found in most soils and earthen construction materials. It is the largest source of radiation exposure in the U.S. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency attributes radon to more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually (about one every 25 minutes).

U.S. Surgeon General recommends testing all houses for radon. For more information, visit our webpage or watch the Radon Public Health Service Announcement Video.

Indoor Air

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates the average American spends nearly 90% of their time indoors. Poor indoor air quality can cause chronic respiratory diseases like asthma or trigger acute symptoms such as headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea, and fatigue.

Common indoor pollutants include:

  • Molds
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pets

Chemical pollutants like radon gas or formaldehyde also pose significant risks.
