Tanning Facilities

Florida Department of Health in Nassau County Environmental Health

Exposure to non-ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet light, has been implicated in the occurrence of acute injuries and chronic diseases. Tanning devices expose users of the equipment to ultraviolet radiation to affect a tan. DOH regulates tanning facilities to prevent or reduce the risk of occurrence of those injuries and diseases that may occur due to the exposure. Facilities are also regulated to prevent the occurrence of communicable diseases associated with the lack of sanitary operation of the facility. To achieve this purpose, county offices license and inspect tanning facilities for compliance with the Department’s safety and sanitation standards.

Tanning facilities must only allow customers to tan only once within a 24 hour period. For more information, please download the indoor tanning facts brochure.

We also ensure that employees that assist customers or operate tanning devices are formally trained in the operation and maintenance of those devices. For more information on this program visit the Florida Department of Health website.
