Environmental Health ensures the correct handling, labeling, storage, treatment, and disposal of biomedical waste to protect employees, patients, and the public from disease-causing agents. The Florida Legislature implemented some of the first biomedical waste regulations in the US in response to biomedical waste washing up on Florida’s pristine beaches. The program strives to protect healthcare workers and the general public from risks associated with improperly managed biomedical waste.
The state’s biomedical waste program works by issuing permits, monitoring compliance, and providing guidance on proper waste management. Residents and healthcare facilities can find comprehensive information about compliance, applications, and associated forms on the Florida Department of Health Biomedical Waste Program website.
