Florida Healthy Beaches

Florida Department of Health in Nassau County Environmental Health

Green land with a healthy beach.

Coastal Recreational Beach Monitoring and Research

The authority and funding for this program come from the State Healthy Beaches Program, which was enacted through state legislation in August of 2000. This program includes all 34 of Florida's coastal counties and aims to protect public health and safety by monitoring water quality at recreational beaches.

Water Quality Monitoring

Our team conducts regular water quality testing at various beach sites across Nassau County. We test for potential contaminants such as bacteria and other harmful pollutants. These tests help us ensure that our beaches are safe for swimming and other recreational activities.

Public Notifications

When water quality issues are detected, we promptly notify the public through various channels, including our website, social media, and local news outlets. We provide clear guidance on any necessary precautions to take to avoid health risks.

Educational Programs

We offer educational programs and resources to inform residents and visitors about the importance of water quality and how to help protect our beaches. Our initiatives include community workshops, informational brochures, and partnerships with local schools and organizations.

Research and Collaboration

Our department collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies to conduct research and develop strategies for improving beach water quality. We also participate in studies that help us better understand the sources and impacts of beach pollution.
