Exposure to non-ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet light, has been linked to acute injuries and chronic diseases. Tanning devices expose users to ultraviolet radiation to create a tan. The Florida Department of Health (DOH) regulates tanning facilities to reduce the risk of these injuries and diseases. Additionally, the DOH ensures that facilities maintain sanitary operations to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
County offices license and inspect tanning facilities to ensure compliance with the DOH's safety and sanitation standards. Tanning facilities must only allow customers to tan once within a 24-hour period. Employees assisting customers or operating tanning devices are required to receive formal training in the operation and maintenance of these devices.
